About this tour

Ruaha National Park: Tanzania’s Untamed Wilderness in the South

Spanning over 20,000 square kilometers, Ruaha National Park stands as the largest national park in Tanzania, forming part of the extensive Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem. Situated in the heart of the country, Ruaha is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts seeking a remote and wild safari experience, characterized by rugged landscapes and remarkable biodiversity.

Rugged Terrains and Predator-Prey Dynamics

Ruaha National Park is renowned for its rugged terrains, featuring undulating hills, rocky escarpments, and meandering rivers. These varied landscapes contribute to an ecosystem that supports a dynamic interplay between predators and prey. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam freely in pursuit of their prey, creating a thrilling spectacle for those fortunate enough to witness these predator-prey interactions.

Rich Biodiversity and the Big Five

Ruaha’s vastness fosters an incredible diversity of wildlife, including large herds of elephants, buffaloes, and various antelope species. The park is also home to the iconic Big Five, with sightings of rhinoceros being a testament to the park’s conservation success. Ruaha’s diverse habitats, from open plains to dense woodlands, provide a home for a myriad of species, making every game drive an exploration of untamed natural beauty.

Great Ruaha River: Lifeblood of the Park

The Great Ruaha River, flowing through the park, is a lifeline for its inhabitants, particularly during the dry season. As water sources dwindle, the river becomes a focal point for wildlife congregations, creating prime opportunities for game viewing. Crocodiles bask on the riverbanks, while hippos wallow in the cooling waters, offering a glimpse into the riverine life of Ruaha.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise and Unique Species

Ruaha National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers, boasting a bird list that includes over 570 species. The park’s varied habitats, from riverine forests to open plains, attract a diverse avian population. Bird enthusiasts can spot species ranging from colorful sunbirds to majestic raptors, enhancing the overall safari experience with the symphony of birdcalls.

Remote Wilderness and Intimate Safari Experience

What sets Ruaha apart is its remoteness and the consequent intimate safari experience it offers. Visitors to Ruaha often find themselves immersed in a vast wilderness with fewer crowds, allowing for a more personalized and unspoiled encounter with nature. This sense of exclusivity adds to the allure of Ruaha National Park, making it a destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path safari adventure.

Conclusion: Ruaha’s Timeless Appeal

Ruaha National Park, with its rugged beauty, rich biodiversity, and remote wilderness, remains a testament to the timeless appeal of Tanzania’s southern circuit. Whether witnessing the drama of predator-prey dynamics, marveling at the diverse birdlife, or simply soaking in the untamed landscapes, Ruaha promises an unforgettable safari experience in the heart of East Africa.

Amazing country, beautifully seen from the seat of a bicycle. So many unusual sights - friendly people (attractive, relaxed, smiling, shouting hello); fields of rice, coffee, rubber, eucalyptus, dragon fruit, etc., farmers herding brown cows and water buffalo; basic living conditions, cooking, eating and washing-up in the open, spilling out onto pavement; scooters everywhere and crazy driving but it seems to work, no road rage; great respect for older people and ancestors (colourful cemeteries and every house has small ancestral shrine). Came back with a real feel for the country, wanting to learn more.

Lifelong memories We were part of a group of 17 who quickly formed a close bond created entirely by the enthusiasm and generosity of our leader. Nothing was too much trouble Long went out of his way every day to make sure we experienced in full life in Vietnam. The trip ran like clockwork, without us feeling we were being rushed at any stage. He made it fun even when we cycled 100 k in a day taking in a very high mountain pass.
